What is General Dentistry?
General dentistry is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the available care and treatment of the teeth and gums. A general dentist is a dental professional who has completed an accredited dental program and has passed all state licensure exams. General dentists, such as Dr. Merrell typically provide preventive care, such as regular teeth cleanings and fluoride treatments, as well as available dental procedures, such as fillings, extractions, and crowns. General dentists may also offer specialized services, such as gum disease treatment, orthodontics, or dental implants.
Why See a General Dentist in Lubbock?
Why see a general dentist? Regular dental visits are essential for maintaining good oral health. During a dental visit, your dentist will check for tooth decay or other problems and can provide treatment to help prevent serious dental problems. So, if you are due for a dental check-up, schedule an appointment with your general dentist today!
Dental Cleanings and Exams
At Merrell & Nichols DDS, we believe the first step in keeping your smile beautiful is ensuring your teeth and gums are healthy. We offer comprehensive new patient exams and routine exams at cleaning appointments.
We recommend having your teeth cleaned at least every six months. Your initial oral examination includes a visual inspection, charting, periodontal probing, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations. We will also take x-rays, including the panoramic x-ray for proper diagnosis of the anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth and the bite-wing x-ray series for accurate diagnosis of proximal decay of posterior teeth.
Dental Fillings
Dental cavities (also known as tooth decay) frequently occur when germs attack tooth enamel and leave behind a hole. Our experienced general dentists provide tooth-colored composite fillings consisting of a composite resin to fill cavities and fix chipped teeth or other minor tooth damage. Composite resin offers a pleasing visual effect and is colored to match your tooth. Today’s fillings are more robust, long-lasting, and realistic-looking than ever before.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are applied to the grooved chewing surfaces of the back teeth to help protect these higher-risk areas from developing tooth decay. These teeth contain natural grooves and fissures that could collect food particles, germs, and plaque, increasing their susceptibility to tooth decay. Sealants consist of a thin, tooth-colored, or invisible substance that we apply onto the chewing surfaces to help guard the molars or premolars against corrosion.
Fluoride
Fluoride is a substance that occurs naturally strengthens teeth and lowers the risk of tooth decay. We apply fluoride treatments to your teeth as a preventive dentistry procedure to strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the risk of cavities.
Tooth Extractions
We may need to extract your tooth if tooth decay has damaged enough of your tooth’s structure to make repair difficult. Additionally, we may need to remove teeth to prepare for the insertion of dental implants or to extract a wisdom tooth that is threatening to crowd nearby teeth or is not correctly emerging from the gums. We will always try to save your natural tooth first and foremost.

The importance of dental exams lies in their preventive and diagnostic nature. Regular dental check-ups are crucial for the early detection of dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancers. By identifying potential problems in their initial stages, dentists can implement timely interventions, preventing further complications and reducing the need for extensive treatments.
Additionally, dental exams involve professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, preventing common dental ailments. Beyond addressing existing concerns, these exams also serve as an opportunity for oral health education, empowering individuals to adopt effective oral hygiene practices and maintain a healthy smile throughout their lives. Regular dental exams play a pivotal role in promoting overall well-being by ensuring the longevity of one’s oral health.

Composite Fillings

Do you have a cavity? A dental filling is an excellent way to restore cavities. The procedure is fast and effective. You can have your tooth filled in one visit and get back to your life. We are a top-rated Lubbock dentist.
What are Composite Dental Fillings, and What Do They Do?
We use dental fillings to restore cavities. We place the filling material in the cavity and then seal it. This process prevents further decay and keeps your tooth healthy. A filling with a small cavity can help prevent it from getting worse.
What is the Process?
The process of getting a filling is quick and easy. Dr. Merrell will ensure you are comfortable and that we have answered your questions about the process. Once you are ready, we will use specialized dental instruments to clean the cavity and place the filling material. Once the filling is in place, we will seal it using a specialized light.
We may have you come for a follow-up appointment after some time has passed. This way, we can ensure the fillings are doing their job as expected.
What are the Benefits of Dental Fillings?
Dental fillings have many benefits. They include:
-A quick and easy way to restore cavities: fillings are often the best approach to cavities. Suppose you allow a cavity to go for too long without addressing it. In that case, you may at some point need treatment that is far more uncomfortable, invasive, and expensive than a simple filling—for example, a root canal or even a tooth extraction. But a filling takes just a short time during one dental visit, and you’re done!
-A way to prevent further decay: once we fill a cavity, the decay halts. The filling also eliminates toothache and precludes the need for more extensive dental work.
-A way to keep your tooth healthy: when you have a filling, your tooth can function as expected. The packing helps keep your smile healthy and looking its best.
How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?
Most dental fillings last for many years. The better you take care of them, the longer they can stay. With proper care, they can last a lifetime.
How to Take Care of Your Composite Dental Fillings
Taking care of your dental fillings is essential to ensure they last. Be sure to brush, floss regularly, and see your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Be careful when biting into hard candies or foods, as this can damage your fillings and teeth!
If you have a filling that we need to replace, Dr. Merrell can help. We will assess the condition of your packing and recommend the best course of action.
What is the Cost of a Dental Filling?
The cost of a dental filling will vary depending on different factors, including the filling material used. At Merrell and Nichols Dentistry, we use only the highest quality materials. We will work with you to find a material that fits your budget and needs. We can provide accurate cost estimates before beginning any work, and we have financing options to help you pay for our quality dental services.

Dental Crowns

A happy smile starts with healthy teeth, and that’s why we offer dental crowns. We can help restore your smile with our comfortable and safe dental crowns if you have cavities or other dental problems. They look great, and the placement procedure is comfortable. So if you need dental crowns from the best dentist in Lubbock TX come to Merrell and Nichols.
What are Dental Crowns, and Why Do I Need Them?
Dental crowns are also called “caps.” They are placed over the top of a tooth to protect it. Crowns contain different materials, including metals, porcelain, and composites. They are often used to:
– Cover a tooth treated with a root canal
– Protect a weak tooth from breaking
– Hold together parts of a cracked tooth
– Cover a misshapen or severely discolored tooth
– Cover a tooth that has had too much of the enamel worn away
The Placement Procedure for Dental Crowns
The placement procedure for dental crowns is usually pretty simple at our Lubbock dental office. First, we will numb the area around the tooth so you won’t feel any pain. Then, we will gently file down the tooth so the crown can fit over it. Once the tooth is the right size, we will take an impression of it so the crown can be custom-made. It usually takes about two weeks for the crown to be ready. In the meantime, you will wear a temporary crown.
Once the permanent crown is ready, we will numb the area around the tooth again and then carefully place the crown over the tooth. We will ensure it fits correctly and then cements it into place.
How to Care for Dental Crowns After Placement
You need to take good care of your dental crown to last. Here are some tips:
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss once a day.
- Visit the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
- Avoid chewing hard foods, ice, or candy.
- Don’t open bottles or packages with your teeth.
The Benefits of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns offer many benefits, including:
- Improved Appearance: Dental crowns can cover misshapen, discolored, or damaged teeth.
- Improved Dental Health: Dental crowns can protect weak or damaged teeth from further decay or injury.
- Improved Function: Dental crowns can help teeth work better when chewing or biting.

Dental Bridges

Are you missing a tooth? You’re not alone. Missing teeth can be embarrassing and make it difficult to eat and speak. Dental bridges are an excellent way to replace missing teeth. They’re functional, they feel great, and they look natural. You’ll be able to smile with confidence once your dental bridge is in place. If you need a dental bridge, come to the top-rated Lubbock dentist.
What are Dental Bridges?
Dental bridges are prosthetics that we use to fill in the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge holds the prosthetic in place on both sides with dental crowns. Dental bridges contain various materials, including gold, silver, and porcelain.
How Are Dental Bridges Made?
Dental bridges are custom-made to fit your mouth. Dr. Merrell will take impressions of your teeth and create a mouth model. We will carefully craft the dental bridge to match the shape and color of your natural teeth.
What are the Benefits of Dental Bridges?
There are many benefits of dental bridges, including:
- Improved Appearance – Dental bridges can give you a natural-looking smile.
- Improved Oral Health – Dental bridges can help improve your oral health by preventing your remaining teeth from shifting.
- Improved Speech – Dental bridges can help improve your speech by filling in the gaps in your teeth.
- Improved Chewing – Dental bridges can help improve your chewing by filling in the gaps in your teeth.
How Long do Dental Bridges Last?
Dental bridges can last for many years with proper care. However, they may need to be replaced or adjusted over time. Like anything, the better you care for them, the better they can last.
How to Take Care of Dental Bridges
Taking the best care of your dental bridges includes brushing and flossing daily. You can’t floss between the prosthetic tooth row of your bridge, but you can floss the rest of your teeth. Flossing will keep your teeth in the best possible health, and a dental bridge can last longer in a healthy mouth because it relies on healthy teeth for support. And you can brush your bridge the same way you touch the rest of your teeth to keep it clean and in great shape.
Being careful when biting into hard foods or candies would be best. Your dental bridge can break or become loose. And be sure to visit the dentist for regular checkups. During the checkups, your dentist can ensure your bridge is functioning properly.
What is the Cost of a Dental Bridge?
The cost of dental bridges can vary depending on the materials used and the complexity of the procedure. We can provide accurate estimates of your costs during your consultation. We also offer payment options to help you manage costs.
What is the Dental Bridge Process?
During your initial consultation, Dr. Merrell will examine your mouth and discuss your treatment options. If you decide to get a dental bridge, the next step is to take impressions of your teeth. These impressions will help create a model of your mouth and a bridge that will fit perfectly.
Once the dental bridge is ready, you will come back to our office to have it placed. The bridge will be fitted over your natural teeth and bonded. You may need to return for a follow-up appointment to ensure the dental bridge works correctly.

Root Canal Therapy

You may have an infection or decay in the tooth pulp or nerve if you have dental pain and irregular sensitivity. Everywhere you go, dentists emphasize how crucial it is to take care of these problems as soon as they arise and frequently suggest root canal therapy. Modern methods have made root canal therapy less unpleasant and drawn-out than it once was. We try our utmost to ensure that our patients are at ease. If you need root canal therapy, come to the best dentist in Lubbock TX – Merrell and Nichols Dentistry.
What is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy, also known as root canal treatment, is a dental procedure we use to save a tooth damaged by decay. The process involves removing the damaged tissue inside the tooth, cleaning the area, and then filling it with a particular material.
We can use root canal therapy to treat various conditions, including infections, root fractures, and root Gallagher.
Root canal therapy aims to save the tooth so it can continue functioning properly. Root canal therapy is successful in most cases, and we can keep the tooth. However, some risks are associated with the procedure, including developing an infection. In addition, root canal therapy helps prevent infection spread to other teeth or parts of the body. A root canal is an effective way to restore a damaged tooth and protect your overall oral health.
How do I Know if I Need a Root Canal?
A tooth may sustain damage due to an accident or develop an infection from bacteria that enter the inner pulp through severe tooth decay or a significant break. Suppose a root canal or similar procedure is necessary to repair your tooth and restore its health in certain situations. In that case, our dentists may take an x-ray and perform an oral examination. Common indications that you could require a root canal include:
- A severe or excruciating toothache
- Discomfort when chewing
- Cold or hot temperature sensitivity
- Swelling in the gums or jaw
- A gum-related sore like a pimple
- After an accident, a tooth’s color changes
- Effusion in the jaw
- An abscessed tooth
What is the Root Canal Process?
A root canal is a procedure that Dr. Merrell may recommend if the pulp of your tooth becomes infected. The infection can happen due to decay, injury, or other causes. During a root canal, your dentist removes the damaged pulp. Then the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Cleaning helps to save the tooth and prevent further infection.
During a root canal procedure, we remove the nerve and blood supply from the tooth, and we clean and seal the inside of the tooth.
The root canal process usually involves two or three visits to the dentist. During the first visit, Dr. Merrell will numb your tooth and clean out the inside of it. We will place a temporary filling and give you antibiotics to help clear the infection.
At your second visit, Dr. Merrell will remove the temporary filling and clean your root canal again. They will then put a permanent filling or crown to protect your tooth.
Root canals are usually successful in saving teeth and preventing further infection. However, your dentist may need to extract your tooth even after a root canal. If you have questions about root canals or if you think you might need one, Dr. Merrell will be happy to discuss your options.

Dentures
Missing teeth? You’re not alone. Dentures are a standard solution for missing teeth, and they offer a variety of benefits over other treatments. We can help develop the perfect denture set. They’re made from durable materials, so you can wear them all day without worrying about them falling out or breaking. If you need dentures, see us, the top-rated Lubbock dentist.
What are Dentures, and what are They Used For?
Dentures are prosthetic teeth used to replace one or more missing teeth. They consist of porcelain or plastic and are held in place by suction or a small amount of adhesive. We can use them to improve the function and appearance of your smile.
How do Dentures Work?
Dentures work by filling in the gaps left by missing teeth. They can be taken out and put back in as needed, making them easy to clean and manage.
The Benefits of Dentures Over Other Tooth Replacement Methods
Dentures offer several benefits over other tooth-replacement methods, such as implants or bridges. Dentures are typically more affordable than other options, and we can complete them in a shorter amount of time. They can also involve a less invasive option than alternative solutions and don’t require special care.
Types of Dentures Available
There are three main types of dentures available: complete dentures, partial dentures, and immediate dentures. We use complete dentures to replace all teeth in an arch and partial dentures to replace some. Immediate dentures are placed immediately after removing natural teeth and are a temporary solution until the permanent dentures are ready.

What is the Process for Dentures in Lubbock?
The process for dentures typically takes place over a few weeks. We will take impressions of your teeth and gums during the first visit. These impressions create models of your mouth and carefully craft the dentures as a perfect match for your smile.
We will fit the dentures into your mouth on the second visit and make any necessary adjustments. We will also provide you with instructions on caring for your new dentures.
How to Care for Your Dentures
Caring for your dentures is essential to keep them looking and feeling their best. Be sure to brush your dentures daily with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. It would help if you soaked them in a denture-soaking solution at least once daily to remove any plaque or food particles.
How Much Do Dentures Cost?
Complete dentures can be more expensive than partial dentures, but the cost will depend on various factors, including the nature of your unique dental situation. Dental insurance may also cover part or all of the cost of dentures. Call today for a consultation to get an estimate of how much your dentures will cost.
High-Quality Restorative Dentures
Missing teeth can be embarrassing and make eating the foods you love difficult. Dentures are a great way to replace missing teeth and regain your smile.
With dentures from Dr. Merrell, you can have few restrictions on the kinds of food you can take, minimal social awkwardness brought about by missing teeth and restored facial appearance, including a beautiful smile. Tooth Extractions
Are you experiencing tooth pain? Do you feel you have a tooth that needs to be removed? Trust your dental care with Merrell & Nichols Dentistry! Our team of skilled dental professionals are experts at tooth extractions in Lubbock, Texas.
Tooth extractions are a standard dental procedure done by dentists worldwide. Despite how common they are, the mere thought of getting a tooth extracted might make most dental patients anxious and nervous. But tooth extractions aren’t all that bad, and with Dr. P’Jay Merrell, the process should be smooth and straightforward.
Schedule a consultation today. We will help you understand what tooth extractions entail, why we perform them, what to expect during the procedure, and how to care for your mouth afterward. We will ensure your experience is as comfortable and pain-free as possible.
Everything You Need to Know
Tooth extraction is a procedure where we remove one or more teeth from the mouth. The process treats various dental problems, including severe tooth decay, gum disease, and crowded or impacted teeth. An extraction can be of two types: simple or surgical, with the latter being more complex. Dr. Merrell will recommend the type of extraction you need based on the severity of the dental issue.
Why are Tooth Extractions Done?
We perform tooth extractions for various reasons, but most commonly, for decaying or broken teeth that we cannot restore and cause significant pain or discomfort. Other reasons include the need to create space for other teeth, treat overcrowding, prepare for orthodontic treatment, and prevent the spread of infection if a tooth has become decayed or infected.
How to Prepare
Feeling a bit nervous and apprehensive about the procedure is entirely normal when it comes to tooth extraction. However, taking proactive steps before your appointment can help ease your anxiety and ensure a smoother experience. Following Dr. Merrell’s instructions regarding fasting (if necessary), avoiding certain medications, and arranging for transportation home afterward are crucial. Additionally, discuss any concerns or questions with our team before the procedure begins. Preparing ahead of time can make all the difference in ensuring a successful tooth extraction with minimal discomfort or complications.
What to Expect During the Procedure
If you need a tooth extracted, Dr. Merrell and his team will first numb the affected area around the tooth with local anesthesia. The anesthesia will prevent you from feeling any pain during the procedure. The dentist will then use a specialized tool to loosen the tooth from its socket, remove it from your mouth, and stop any bleeding. The entire procedure usually takes 20-40 minutes, depending on the complexity of the extraction.
Recovery and Aftercare
After the procedure, it’s normal to experience some pain, swelling, and bleeding, which should gradually subside in a few days. If necessary, Dr. Merrell can prescribe pain management medication and antibiotics to ease your discomfort and prevent infection. Following the procedure, practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding smoking and tobacco use, and sticking to soft foods and liquids until your mouth heals.
Tooth Extractions in Lubbock
Tooth extractions are a crucial procedure that can prevent further dental problems and improve your overall oral health. If you need a tooth extraction, Dr. Merrell will ensure that the process is comfortable, stress-free, and completed with high expertise. Remember to follow our aftercare instructions diligently to ensure a speedy recovery and avoid complications.

Laser Dentistry
The nonsurgical laser is a visible light laser that is used to help detect decay in the pits and grooves common in back teeth where it can be difficult to discover. This technology allows us to detect the decay at a very early stage and determine if it needs to be filled or just cleaned out and sealed. In both cases, the tooth is made healthy with minimal loss of tooth structure and no filling is visible. These laser dentistry procedures can most often be performed without the need for any anesthesia.
What Are Soft Tissue Lasers?
Soft tissue lasers are used exclusively for cutting or removal of soft tissue from the gum or other parts of the mouth. They are also used for killing bacteria in periodontal pockets and to stimulate the cells in the area for more rapid and complete healing.
What Are Hard Tissue Lasers?
The hard tissue laser is used primarily for the removal of diseased tooth structure. It has the benefit of leaving a clean, sterile surface that kills all bacteria prior to placing the filling.
Frenectomy
A frenectomy is the repositioning or clipping of one of the muscle attachments either between the gums and the lip or at the base of the tongue. This procedure is used to remove a muscle attachment that interferes with normal movement or speech. Additionally, often times these muscle attachments, when positioned closer to the margins of the gum tissue, can cause excessive loss and recession of the gum tissue around the teeth. Removing or lowering this attachment can help to prevent further gum recession and root exposure. While six of the main frenum attachments (muscle attachments) are between the inner part of the lips and the gum tissue, the other main frenum attachment is located at the base of the tongue and can restrict its movement. In more extreme cases, the individual would not be able to extend their tongue all the way, and the attachment would force the tongue to curl up. By relieving this muscle attachment, it enables full extension of the tongue and proper speech, which may have been hindered before.
What Is A Laser Frenectomy Treatment?
Conventional treatment for releasing the frenum involved a procedure where the frenum was cut with a blade or scissors, with or without sutures to reposition its attachment. Today, there is a procedure called “laser frenectomy” in which the Waterlase is used to zap the frenum with laser pulses without even touching it, gently severing it from its attachment. Healing time for laser frenectomy is reduced drastically, as the Waterlase does not create tissue trauma or charring, as some older lasers did. The actual procedure takes 3-5 minutes, and full healing with new skin is evident within 10 days. The new frenum attachment is at least 5 mm higher up, clearing the gums and releasing the tongue or the lip respectively. There is minimal post-operative discomfort involved with laser frenectomy. The area feels sore for 2-3 days.
Restorative Dentistry
It’s a fact that everyone wants a dazzling, Hollywood-like smile, but not everyone naturally has it. Factors like age, wear and tear, and accidents can cause damage to teeth, ruining the smile. That’s where restorative dentistry comes in. Restorative dentistry is a niche that seeks to bring back the shape, function, and aesthetics of teeth. With our top prosthodontist in Lubbock, Texas, you can get the care your smile deserves at Merrell & Nichols Dentistry.
What is Restorative Dentistry?
Restorative dentistry is a broad term for dental procedures that restore damaged or missing teeth’ function, shape, and aesthetics. The treatment aims to correct dental issues that affect the appearance of your teeth, such as discoloration, chips, cracks, or decay. A prosthodontist like Dr. P’Jay Merrell is a licensed dentist who provides specialized care and expertise in restorative dentistry. Dr. P’Jay Merrell focuses on the science and art of dental restorations, working to ensure your teeth are not just functioning properly but look natural as well.
Restorative Dental Treatment We Offer
There are various procedures in restorative dentistry. At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, we offer restorative treatments like:
Dental Implants
Dental implants are titanium posts inserted into the jawbone to substitute natural teeth roots. They are a permanent solution to missing teeth, and once implanted, they ensure the jawbone remains healthy while the appearance and function of teeth are restored.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are tooth-colored caps placed over damaged or decayed teeth to restore their shape, strength, and function. They also enhance their aesthetics for a better appearance.
Dental Bridges
Bridges are an excellent option for fixing gaps where you have one or more missing teeth. The artificial teeth are anchored to adjoining teeth or implants, giving a natural-looking smile.
Dentures
Traditional dentures are removable teeth replacements that complete your smile in areas where several teeth are missing.
Composite Fillings
Also known as tooth-colored fillings, composite fillings repair decayed or damaged teeth. Composite fillings comprise a blend of plastic and glass; these fillings mimic the appearance of natural teeth, making them an aesthetic choice for patients.
Root Canal Therapy
This restorative procedure is required when the pulp of the tooth, which contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes infected or damaged. During the therapy, the pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed, thus preserving the tooth and preventing further infection.
Tooth Extractions
Sometimes, a tooth might be too severely damaged or decayed to be saved, necessitating its removal from the socket in the bone. This surgical procedure is typically the last resort when all other restorative options have been exhausted.
Benefits of Restorative Dentistry from a Prosthodontist
- Improved Oral Health: Restorative dental procedures replace or protect damaged teeth, substantially enhancing oral health outcomes.

Cosmetic Dentistry: The New Standard of Care
A beautiful smile can light up a room and boost your confidence, which is why more and more people are opting for cosmetic dentistry procedures. From teeth whitening to porcelain veneers, Merrell & Nichols Dentistry can help you get the smile you’ve always wanted.
Several different cosmetic dentistry procedures are available, each with its own benefits. Here are just a few of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures that we offer at our practice:
Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening is one of the simplest and most affordable ways to improve your smile. We offer in-office and at-home teeth whitening treatments to provide the best option for your needs and lifestyle.
Porcelain Veneers: Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells bonded to your teeth’ front surfaces. Veneers are an excellent way to cover up stains, chips, and other imperfections on your teeth. They are also durable and long-lasting, making them an excellent investment in your smile.
Dental Bonding: Dental bonding is a quick and easy way to fix minor imperfections on your teeth, such as cracks, chips, and gaps. We can complete bonding in just one visit to our office, and it can be more affordable than porcelain veneers.
Dental Implants: Dental implants are artificial tooth roots placed into your jawbone to support one or more artificial teeth (known as crowns). Dental implants are a great way to replace missing or damaged teeth and can give you a smile that looks and feels just like your natural teeth.
Complete Smile Makeover: A gorgeous, healthy smile can completely change your life. Contemporary cosmetic dentistry can dramatically alter your appearance by whitening, straightening, or contouring your teeth. A smile makeover can be the solution if you have teeth that are worn, moved, missing, or broken. A smile makeover considers your facial features, skin tone, hair color, tooth shape, gum tissue, and lip position to develop a plan for your best smile. A smile makeover can improve the following dental issues and more:
Crooked teeth
Gummy smile
Uneven teeth
Chipped or broken teeth
Missing teeth
Stained and discolored teeth

Highlighting Teeth Whitening as a Cosmetic Dental Treatment
Having a beautiful smile is easier than you may think. Many people can achieve their desired smile with our simple teeth whitening procedure. Our teeth whitening can eliminate stains and correct tooth discoloration. We have several options to create your dazzling smile, including in-office and take-home whitening treatments. We also provide crowns and veneers as an alternative to teeth whitening for longer-lasting results.
You may be surprised to learn that teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments. It is also one of the most straightforward and affordable. Teeth whitening is an excellent way to brighten your smile and boost your confidence.
How Teeth Whitening Works
Teeth whitening is a simple process that uses bleaching agents to remove stains and discoloration from your teeth. The bleaching agents break down the molecules that cause stains, leaving your teeth looking brighter.
At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, we offer two types of teeth whitening treatments: in-office teeth whitening and take-home teeth whitening. In-office teeth whitening is performed in our office using a special bleaching agent and special equipment. In-office teeth whitening is an excellent option if you’re looking for immediate results or have particularly difficult stains requiring a more potent bleaching agent. On the other hand, take-home teeth whitening uses a lower-concentration bleaching agent that you apply at home using custom-fitted mouth trays. Take-home teeth whitening is an excellent option if you’re looking for a more affordable treatment or feel more comfortable whitening your teeth in the comfort of your own home.
The Benefits of Teeth Whitening
There are many benefits associated with professional teeth whitening, including:
- Whiter, brighter teeth
- Increased confidence
- A more youthful appearance
Professional vs. Over-The-Counter Teeth Whitening
You can buy teeth whitening kits at your grocery store. These products are easily accessible, but it is best to use professional teeth whitening to ensure the safety and efficacy of the whitening process. Over-the-counter products are different from our professional whitening products. For example, the whitening agent concentration is stronger and more effective in our treatments. And the custom-made whitening trays made at our office offer superior fit and less leakage of the whitening gel, professionally protecting the soft tissue in your mouth.
Professional teeth whitening is an excellent way to achieve many benefits without undergoing invasive procedures. And at Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, we make it easy and affordable for you to get the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.
Quality Teeth Whitening in Lubbock, TX
Professional teeth whitening may be right for you if you’re looking for an easy way to improve your smile. At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, we offer both in-office and take-home teeth whitening options to suit your needs.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are a popular and effective cosmetic dental treatment used to enhance the appearance of teeth. At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, Dr. P’Jay Merrell and his team of experienced professionals specialize in providing patients with beautiful, natural-looking porcelain veneers in Lubbock, Texas.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are custom-made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. They are used to improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored, chipped, or misaligned. The porcelain used to make veneers is strong, durable, and highly resistant to staining. Porcelain veneers are a more permanent solution than other cosmetic dentistry treatments, such as teeth whitening.
Dr. Merrell and his team understand that a beautiful smile can profoundly impact a person’s self-confidence and quality of life. That is why we take the time to listen to each patient’s unique needs and goals and create a personalized treatment plan that will bring their desired results.
What can Dental Veneers be Used to Fix?
At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, porcelain veneers are used to correct various cosmetic dental issues, including discolored or stained teeth, chipped or worn teeth, gaps between teeth, and misaligned or misshapen teeth. We can also use them to repair damage caused by injury or decay. Further, porcelain veneers can also close gaps between teeth and correct minor bite issues.
What is the Process of Getting Dental Veneers?
The process of getting porcelain veneers typically takes two visits. During the first visit, Dr. Merrell and his team will take molds of your teeth and create a customized set of veneers. During the second visit, we will bond the veneers to the front surfaces of your teeth. Here is what to expect:
Getting dental veneers requires several steps. The first step is to schedule an appointment with a dentist like Dr. Merrell. During the appointment, Dr. Merrell will examine your teeth, discuss your desired outcome, and take X-rays. Based on the exam, Dr. Merrell will decide if veneers are the best option for your dental situation.
If veneers are the best option, Dr. Merrell will prepare your teeth for the veneers by removing a thin layer of enamel. Etching is done to ensure that the veneers will fit properly and securely. Then, Dr. Merrell will take impressions of your teeth to create a model for the dental lab to make the veneers.
You will come back in a few weeks to have your veneers placed. During this appointment, Dr. Merrell will ensure the veneers fit properly and make any necessary adjustments. Then, we will use a unique adhesive to bond the veneers to your teeth. Finally, Dr. Merrell will polish your veneers to ensure a natural look.
Once we place the veneers, you should return for regular checkups with Dr. Merrell to maintain the veneers and ensure that your teeth remain healthy.
How to Care for Your Veneers
Porcelain veneers can last for many years with proper care and maintenance. You should brush and floss your teeth regularly and visit Merrell & Nichols Dentistry for checkups and cleanings at least twice a year.

Merrell & Nichols Dentistry will guide you on everything there is to know about the process, benefits, and expected outcomes. We have helped many patients with this life-changing procedure and would love to provide you with a high-quality smile makeover in Lubbock, Texas, too!
What is a Smile Makeover?
A Smile Makeover is a term that refers to a combination of dental treatments designed to improve the appearance of your teeth and mouth. A Smile Makeover aims to create a custom-designed, beautiful smile that enhances your appearance and boosts your self-confidence. These treatments can include the following.
Dental Bonding: Dental bonding is a popular cosmetic procedure often used to correct dental issues. This simple and cost-effective treatment involves using a tooth-colored resin material that we apply to the surface of the damaged tooth. Once the resin is in place, it is molded and shaped to blend seamlessly with the surrounding teeth, creating a natural-looking restoration. Dental bonding is an effective treatment for repairing chipped, cracked, or discolored teeth and closing small gaps between teeth. Since we can complete dental bonding in a single visit, it is a convenient option for patients looking to improve the appearance of their smile in a relatively short time. Dental bonding is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive way to restore your smile and boost your confidence.
Porcelain Veneers: Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic material bonded to your teeth’ front surface. We often use this cosmetic dentistry procedure to cover up a range of cosmetic imperfections, including chips and cracks, discolored teeth, misaligned teeth, and gaps between teeth. Porcelain veneers look and feel like natural teeth, making them a popular choice for those looking to improve their smile without any significant structural changes.
Dental Implants: Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. This treatment involves placing a metal root into the jawbone and attaching an artificial tooth to the top. Dental implants are solid and can support a range of dental restorations, including crowns, bridges, and dentures. Unlike other restoration options, dental implants will not slip or move in the mouth and provide a secure, natural-looking solution for missing teeth.
The Benefits of a Smile Makeover
A Smile Makeover can offer many other benefits besides giving you a perfect smile. It can improve your oral health as we can treat various dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, and crooked or misaligned teeth. Additionally, patients who undergo Smile Makeovers report higher self-esteem, increased confidence, and happier life.
The Smile Makeover Process
The first step in the Smile Makeover process is scheduling a consultation with Dr. P’Jay Merrell. Dr. Merrell will listen to your concerns during the consultation and assess your dental health. He and his team will also take photos and impressions of your teeth to create a 3D model of your smile. With this model, we can show you what your new smile could look like. Once the consultation is complete, the dentist will create a personalized treatment plan based on your specific dental issues and goals.
Who is a Candidate for a Smile Makeover?
Many people are suitable candidates for Smile Makeovers. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth or have dental problems such as crooked or missing teeth, teeth stains, or chips, you may benefit from a Smile Makeover. However, before undergoing treatment, having healthy gums and teeth is essential. If necessary, our team can treat any underlying issues before beginning your Smile Makeover.
The Expected Outcomes
A Smile Makeover can transform your smile and change your life. You can expect to have better oral health, boosted self-esteem, and an enhanced appearance. Your new smile will be custom-designed to suit your facial features and smile line, making it unique and natural-looking. Additionally, many patients report improved speech and chewing functionality, which can positively impact their overall quality of life.

Dental Bonding: The Pros and Cons
When it comes to cosmetic improvements to your smile, many different options are available. Dental bonding is one such option. But what is dental bonding, exactly? And is it the right choice for you? We can help you make an informed decision.
What is Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding is an excellent solution for minor defects in the teeth. It involves a cosmetic dentistry procedure in which we use tooth-colored resin to improve the appearance of your teeth. We can carefully color-match the material to your natural teeth to look like a natural part of your smile. We can use the resin to change the shape of your teeth, close gaps between your teeth, or lighten the color of your teeth.
We start by prepping the tooth surface to make it easier to adhere to the bonding material. Then we place the material on the teeth and harden it with a specialized light. Finally, we shape and polish it to a lustrous finish.
The Pros of Dental Bonding
Choosing dental bonding as your cosmetic dentistry treatment has several benefits. For starters, dental bonding is one of the more affordable cosmetic dentistry options available. It’s also a relatively quick and easy procedure we can complete in just one office visit.
Another advantage of dental bonding is that we can use it to make minor changes to your smile. So if you’re not looking for a significant overhaul, dental bonding may be a good option.
The Cons of Dental Bonding
Of course, there are also some disadvantages to consider before deciding whether or not dental bonding is right for you. One downside is that the results of dental bonding are not as long-lasting as other cosmetic dentistry options, such as veneers or crowns. In general, you can expect the results of dental bonding to last for three to five years before needing to be touched up or replaced entirely. But don’t worry. We can help you keep your teeth in tip-top shape whenever you need us!
Another thing to remember is that dental bonding isn’t suitable for everyone. Dental bonding probably won’t be enough to correct the problem if you have extensive damage or decay. In cases like these, more invasive procedures may be necessary.
Dental Bonding in Lubbock, TX
Dental bonding is a popular treatment for a variety of dental concerns. The procedure involves using a tooth-colored resin to improve the appearance of teeth. Bonding can be used to repair cracked or chipped teeth, close gaps between teeth, and change the shape or color of teeth. The results are usually natural-looking and long-lasting.
Ultimately, the best way to decide whether or not dental bonding is right for you is to schedule a consultation with our experienced cosmetic dental team, who can assess your individual needs and recommend the best course of treatment. At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, we specialize in all aspects of cosmetic dentistry and would be more than happy to help you achieve the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted!

What is Implant Dentistry?
Implant Dentistry is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on restoring missing teeth or replacing broken or damaged teeth with artificial implants. Implant Dentistry involves placing a titanium post into the jawbone, which then fuses with the bone to create a secure foundation for a dental prosthesis, such as a crown, bridge, denture, or implant-supported denture. We then top the implant post with a crown, bridge, or denture designed to look and feel like a natural tooth.
Types of Dental Implants in Lubbock, TX
Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, located in Lubbock, Texas, is a leading provider of implant dentistry. Led by Dr. P’Jay Merrell, the practice offers a wide range of implant dentistry services, including full-mouth reconstructions, dental implants, implant-supported dentures, and more. Dr. Merrell is a board-certified prosthodontist who is highly experienced in implant dentistry. He and his team of experienced professionals strive to provide the highest quality care and personalized attention to every patient.
Dental Implants: Dental implants are titanium posts, usually shaped like screws, which we surgically place into the jawbone beneath the gums. They act as artificial tooth roots, providing a solid foundation for the permanent placement of replacement teeth. We can use dental implants to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or an entire arch of teeth.
Dental Implant Bridge: A dental implant bridge is a type of denture permanently affixed to the jaw using two or more dental implants. We use it to replace one or more teeth that are missing. The implants are anchors for the bridge, which is made of false teeth fused together. The implants hold the bridge in place and are not removable like a traditional denture.
Implant-Supported Dentures: Implant-supported dentures are held in place by dental implants. They are generally more stable and comfortable than traditional dentures because they are secured to the jawbone and supported by implants, which act like the roots of the missing teeth. Implant-supported dentures can also help to prevent bone loss in the jaw.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
There are many benefits of dental implants.
Improved Appearance: Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth so you can smile confidently.
Improved Speech: Dental implants can help you speak more clearly than with dentures, so there are no more worries about slurring your words when talking.
Improved Comfort: Dental implants are more comfortable than dentures because there’s no pressure on the gums.
Durability: Dental implants are very strong and can last a lifetime with proper care.
Easier Eating: Dental implants make chewing and eating your favorite foods easier.
Improved Self-Esteem: When you feel confident about your smile, it can boost your self-esteem.
Better Oral Health: Dental implants don’t require the surrounding teeth to be filed down as bridges do. This can help preserve your natural teeth and improve overall oral health.
Convenience: Dental implants don’t require special care or maintenance, so you can brush and floss like you usually do.
Cost-Effective: Dental implants are a long-term solution that could save you money in the long run because they don’t need to be replaced like dentures.
Improved Quality of Life: Dental implants allow you to enjoy your favorite foods and activities without worrying about your dentures slipping or falling out.

Preventative Dentistry
If you’re one of those who only visit the dentist when you have a dental emergency, think again. Neglecting your oral health can lead to painful and costly dental problems you can prevent by visiting the dentist every six months. These dental problems are where our preventative dentistry in Lubbock, Texas, comes in.
Why is preventive dental care so critical, and what can you expect from this type of dental treatment? Preventative dentistry aims to provide you with the education, tools, and services necessary to keep your teeth and gums healthy and free of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
What is Preventative Dentistry?
Preventative dentistry is all about avoiding dental problems before they arise. The most important part of preventative dental care is regular dental checkups. It is best to visit your dentist twice a year to thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, and mouth. During these visits, your dentist will look for signs of decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems. They’ll also perform a thorough cleaning of your teeth and gums to remove any plaque or tartar buildup that you may have missed during your regular brushing and flossing routine.
Preventing Dental Problems Starts With Knowledge
Another essential aspect of preventative dentistry is patient education. Your dentist can help you learn how to care for your teeth and gums properly. They’ll teach you how to brush and floss effectively, which mouthwash to use, and which foods to avoid. They’ll also give you advice on which dental tools you can use to maintain the health of your teeth and gums between dental appointments.
Preventative Dental Services
Preventative dental care goes beyond regular checkups, cleanings, and patient education. At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, we also offer treatments that help protect your teeth from decay and other oral health problems. These treatments may include:
Fluoride Applications: At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, your dental health is our top priority. We ensure your teeth are strong and healthy through fluoride applications. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens teeth and helps prevent tooth decay. The team at Merrell & Nichols Dentistry applies fluoride to your teeth safely and effectively, and we recommend fluoride treatments for patients of all ages. This simple procedure only takes a few minutes and can make a significant difference in the health of your teeth. Don’t hesitate to make an appointment with Merrell & Nichols Dentistry for your next fluoride treatment.
Dental Sealants: At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, we offer an effective way to prevent tooth decay with dental sealants. The sealants are a thin protective coating that we apply to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars, the teeth most commonly affected by cavities. This simple procedure is quick and painless, as the liquid sealant is painted onto the teeth and then hardened with a special light. It’s an excellent option for children and adults prone to cavities or having difficulty reaching their back teeth with a toothbrush. With dental sealants, you can have greater peace of mind knowing that your teeth are protected from the harmful effects of decay, helping you maintain a healthy smile for years to come.

From cosmetic care to fillings and crowns, Dr. P’Jay Merrell and his experienced professionals can work with you to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy. We also offer preventive care, including oral cancer screening, at our Lubbock facility.
Overview of Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer screening is a part of your regular dental checkup. It is a quick and painless process that helps to identify any abnormalities in the mouth, tongue, and lips early on. During the screening, we will check for any lumps, bumps, or discoloration within your mouth and feel around for any unusual tissue changes or tenderness. This can help us to detect any signs of cancer and recommend treatment before it develops further.
We may also take X-rays if needed to get a better look at what’s going on. We highly encourage our patients to let us know if they’ve noticed anything out of the ordinary in their mouths so that we can conduct an oral cancer screening right away for peace of mind – prevention is key!
What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer is a severe and life-threatening form of cancer that can affect the face, mouth, and throat – all body areas essential for speech and breathing. It can occur in any tissues found in these areas, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, salivary glands, or even the soft palate. Early detection of oral cancer is crucial as an early diagnosis can mean a successful treatment plan with far fewer complications.
Some warning signs to be aware of include the following:
- Lesions on any part of the mouth or lip area
- Chronic sore throats
- Pain when swallowing
- Difficulty speaking, moving your tongue, or chewing
- Swollen lymph nodes in your neck
- Numbness anywhere near your mouth
During regular checkups at the dentist’s office, we’ll always take time to look for anything unusual and carry out specific tests if needed. If you notice anyone of these symptoms in yourself or those around you, please don’t hesitate to contact your dentist for a detailed examination.
Benefits of Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer screenings are an essential part of preventive care and can help identify any signs of oral cancer early on before it progresses. Early detection can help improve outcomes and increase the likelihood of successful treatment. Oral cancer screenings can make a massive difference in the long run.
Who Should Get Oral Cancer Screenings in Lubbock?
Anyone can benefit from oral cancer screenings, regardless of age or gender. Oral cancer is far more common in older adults and those who use tobacco products, so individuals in these groups should consider scheduling regular screenings.
Oral Cancer Screening in Lubbock
Dr. Merrell performs an oral cancer screening as an integral part of your thorough annual examination. Cancer screening aims to identify mouth cancer early when there is a greater chance for treatment. You will be screened for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in your mouth.
Oral cancer screenings are an essential line of defense for the overall health of your mouth and body. Everyone should consider getting an oral cancer screening as soon as possible, even if they don’t have any symptoms or risk factors. Even children and adolescents who practice good oral hygiene should receive annual oral cancer screenings from the time they are young adults.
If you’re in the Lubbock area and considering an oral cancer screening, please do not hesitate to give us a call here at Merrell & Nichols Dentistry.
In our office, we use digital radiography which allows us to take x-rays using 90% less radiation than conventional x-rays. This digital technique also allows us to enhance the images for better diagnosis of any dental concerns.

In this blog, let me share why digital X-rays are the way to go in modern dentistry.
The Most Convenient and Safe Diagnostic Tool in Dentistry
Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, we understand how crucial it is to get accurate and real-time diagnostics for my patients. Gone are the days when traditional x-rays are the only option for observing and diagnosing oral and dental issues.
Digital x-rays are now the norm in most dental practices, including our very own Merrell & Nichols Dentistry. Not only are they safer and more efficient, but they also provide a better patient experience.
With digital x-rays, we can look for changes in the teeth and jawbone, cavities, and any signs of infection or inflammation. In particular, digital x-rays allow us to spot problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye, such as impacted teeth or cysts.
Digital X-rays also provide us with a detailed overview of your oral health, allowing us to detect any areas of concern quickly and accurately.
Less Radiation Exposure
Traditional X-rays are used to emit radiation that can pose health risks if delivered in high doses. Our digital X-rays use 90% less radiation than conventional x-rays. One of the most critical benefits of digital X-rays is the minimum radiation exposure they provide.
Faster Results
Gone are the days when patients have to wait a couple of days to get X-ray results. With digital X-rays, they are readily available almost instantly as the images are sent directly to a computer for review. Digital X-rays can also be zoomed in or enhanced, making it easier to see and diagnose potential dental issues.
Environmentally Friendly
Digital X-rays are more environmentally friendly as they eliminate the need for chemical film development and disposal. Also, a single digital X-ray machine can replace multiple outdated X-ray machines, occupying less space and reducing energy consumption.
Enhanced Patient Experience
Digital X-rays reduce the need for retakes, which are often a result of poor image quality in traditional X-rays. Additionally, digital X-ray images can be shared with patients’ healthcare providers, making communicating the necessary treatments and procedures easier.
Superior Diagnostics
Digital X-rays provide superior diagnostic capabilities compared to traditional X-rays. The high-resolution images offer more detailed information on the teeth, jaw, and surrounding tissues. As a result, dentists can identify dental issues earlier and determine the best course of action for effective treatment.

What are Sealants and their Benefits?
Sealants are an essential tool in preventing cavities and promoting good oral health. A tooth’s structure has fine grooves or pits that accumulate plaque, not because the person doesn’t brush but because they are too narrow or small to allow even one toothbrush bristle into them. These areas will develop decay if they are not cleaned.
Sealants are used to prevent decay by filling in these pits and grooves. They’re a thin, plastic-like material applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth that harden and form a protective barrier. This barrier protects against harmful bacteria and other particles that can cause decay. The coating seals the grooves and pits, making it possible to brush off all the plaque and keep your teeth healthy.
With sealants, you can enjoy all your favorite foods without worrying about damaging your teeth! Plus, they’re easily reversible and completely safe, causing no harm whatsoever and providing excellent protection. Get your sealants today to enjoy optimal dental health easily and confidently!
Common Uses for Sealants
Patients of all ages can benefit from sealants; for children, sealants help protect against pits and fissures in the back molars that may be hard to clean with a toothbrush. Sealants can fill any cracks and crevices for adults to help keep these areas debris-free.
What is the Process?
Applying sealants to your teeth is an integral part of preventing cavities and maintaining the health of your mouth. Applying sealants is a simple, fast process. First, we’ll clean the surface of each tooth with a unique solution so the sealant will stay in place. We’ll then apply very thin layers of sealant to each tooth to create a protective shield over them. Finally, we’ll use a unique light-cured technique that quickly and safely seals your newly applied sealants. The entire process only takes minutes, and you should feel no discomfort during or after it has been completed!
How to Care For Your Teeth With Sealants
Taking care of your teeth when you have sealants is vital for keeping them in perfect condition. These sealants create a barrier between your teeth and potential decay, so it’s crucial to maintain good oral hygiene. Regularly brushing twice a day, flossing at least once daily, getting regular dental checkups, and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash are all keys to keeping your sealants in an ideal shape. Additionally, try to avoid foods high in sugar, as this can increase the chances of decay forming on or under the sealant material. With careful habits and regular hygiene routines, your teeth should remain healthy and look great even with sealant protection!
Dental Sealants in Lubbock, Texas
Sealants provide an excellent, cost-effective solution for tooth care and preventing cavities. They should be a part of every dental hygiene plan, particularly for children and those with deep grooves on their teeth. By properly caring for your teeth with proper brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits, you can ensure that your tooth enamel is protected and that your overall dental health is at its best.
If you’re considering getting sealants or would like more information on the process and benefits of sealants, feel free to call our office for a consultation. We’ll be happy to help give you additional details about this procedure so you can make an informed decision about maintaining optimal oral health.
Saliva Testing For Periodontal Disease

Saliva testing provides information on 11 different species of bacteria known to trigger periodontal disease. In addition to identifying the bacterial pathogens, the test provides a bacterial-related risk of disease progression and suggestions for suitable antibiotic and periodontal therapy protocols. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gum tissue and other structures supporting the teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. Besides helping with tooth retention, successful periodontal treatment can help patients with diabetes to better control their disease. (1,2) About 50% of Americans have gingival bleeding, the more common but less severe form of periodontal disease. (3) Several research studies have associated gum disease with other chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease (Periodontal Disease) accounts for about 70% of adult tooth loss. Swollen, inflamed gums characterize it. Plaque, a sticky substance that forms in the mouth from food, saliva, and bacteria, gets inside the space between the gum, causing problems. Plaque hardens into a substance called calculus, or tarter, that is very difficult to remove. Eventually, the bacteria tartar eats away at the fibers that hold the gums to the teeth, creating deep pockets. As bacteria spread, the pockets become deeper until the bacteria finally eat away the bone that holds the tooth in place.
How is Gum Disease Diagnosed?
Effective oral health is crucial to maintaining your overall well-being, and a key factor in this is identifying and addressing gum disease as soon as possible. At Merrell & Nichols Dentistry, we understand the importance of a comprehensive diagnosis when it comes to gum health.
Our skilled dental professional team uses techniques and tools to diagnose gum disease, including X-rays and periodontal probing effectively. One technique is measuring the depth of the pockets around each tooth. Pockets greater in depth are considered hazardous and will generally require treatment. The early detection and prevention of gum disease is ano your dentist regularly.
Through regular check-ups and exams, we can identify any signs of gum disease early, allowing us to take swift action to restore your oral health. So, if you have any concerns about gum health, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with us today to receive the best possible care.
How is Gum Disease Treated?
Gum disease is treated by carefully removing the bacteria and substances that form in the pockets around the teeth. The removal of this material requires great skill. Our dental team has had advanced training regarding effectively removing all the bacteria. This process of removing the bacteria usually requires several visits to our office. Once we have removed the bacteria, a registered hygienist must clean and maintain the pockets regularly. Otherwise, the bacteria can return.

Night Guards And Sports Guards
Grinding and clenching your teeth, known as bruxism, can lead to cracked teeth, pain, and even tooth loss. Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ/TMD) can develop from bruxism and are extremely uncomfortable disorders of the jaw. Night guards and splints help to treat both these conditions. Bruxism and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ/TMD) are two painful conditions that can affect your quality of life. If you are suffering from either of these conditions, give us a call. We can create a treatment plan for you to help your condition and make your life more comfortable.
Bruxism
Bruxism is the medical name for teeth grinding or clenching. Some people who suffer from bruxism are not even aware of the exact problem. You might have dental problems, an aching jaw, or even a cracked tooth and not realize that the problem is that you have been grinding your teeth. While some teeth grinding and clenching is caused by stress or anxiety, most teeth grinding occurs at night. If left untreated, the results can be quite problematic including:
- Headaches
- Jaw Pain
- Loose Teeth
- Fractured teeth
- Worn teeth
- Hearing loss
- TMJ/TMD
Many people with bruxism use a night guard while they are sleeping. This is a custom-fitted appliance that will help protect your teeth from the grinding.
Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
Temporomandibular joint disorders occur when the temporomandibular joint of the jaw, the place where your lower jaw is hinged to your skull, becomes injured or inflamed. This condition may be referred to as either TMJ or TMD. TMJ/TMD can have multiple causes. Some of the most common are:
- Bruxism
- Dislocation of the cushioning disc within the joint
- Arthritis
- Injury to the jaw including blunt trauma and whiplash
This condition is quite painful. If you are suffering from any of the following symptoms, you should be evaluated for TMJ/TMD:
- Pain in your face, jaw, neck, or shoulders, especially when chewing, speaking, or yawning
- Clicking and popping in the jaw joint
- ?Locking? of the jaw
- Swelling
- Fatigue in the jaw
- Difficulty chewing
Like bruxism, night guards are helpful for people with TMJ/TMD. The guard keeps your teeth slightly separated and prevents them from clenching, which can exacerbate the condition. If your condition is more severe, you may require a splint to hold your jaw in place so that the joint can heal. As the name implies, night guards are worn while you are sleeping. Splints are worn all day.
Just like any other protective sports gear, a mouth guard is essential for protecting your teeth from injuries in and around the mouth. It is often over looked but, mouth guards are available for athletes of all ages.
Importance of Mouth Guards
A mouth guard acts as a shield not only your teeth, but also for the soft tissues and gums. It doesn?t matter if the sport involves rough contact, light contact, or no contact at all, there is always the potential for athletes to be at risk for broken teeth and/or oral injuries. According to the American Dental Association reports that athletes who play sports with a mouth guard are 60 times less likely to damage their teeth than those who chose to play without one. If you think you or your child might be a candidate for a Sports Guard, visit with us at your next visit about protecting your teeth while you play sports.
Infection Control
Merrell & Nichols Dentistry pays very strict attention to infection control in their office. We follow strict infection control guidelines set by OSHA. We sterilize all instruments. i-CAT 3D Imaging: What is it?
A front-runner technology in 3D imaging is i-CAT, an advancement in dental X-rays. i-CAT produces 3D CT scans to provide images of the entire mouth structure, hard and soft tissues, and the surrounding facial structures. Dental practitioners rely heavily on clear and accurate images to diagnose dental problems and provide precise treatment, and i-CAT 3D imaging offers superior imaging capabilities. It produces less harmful doses of radiation than traditional X-rays while producing multi-angled data images, allowing dental practitioners clear and comprehensive views of patients’ mouths.
Benefits of i-CAT 3D Imaging
Complete and Accurate View
i-CAT technology gives dental practitioners a precise and vivid view of patients’ teeth, bone structure, soft tissues, and airways. This results in more straightforward diagnosis and treatment planning, more accurate implant placement, and shorter treatment times. This is particularly important when dealing with complex cases like common problems of airway extraction.
Reduction of Radiation
The significant reduction in radiation exposure in 3D imaging is a welcome benefit to patients. Modern technology allows for lower doses of radiation to be produced than traditional X-ray machines, creating a negligible amount of radiation risk for patients. Dental practitioners, Oral Surgeons, and Endodontists can now practice dentistry without fearing exposing their patients to harmful radiation. This is why we proudly offer i-CAT 3D imaging at our dental office, as exposing radiation to our clients during their dental treatment is not something we wish to do while promising the best care.
Efficient Dental Appointments
In line with the overall benefits, i-CAT 3D imaging makes dental work quicker and more efficient. With traditional X-rays, patients may need to wait several minutes for the film to process, but i-CAT 3D scans only take a few quick taps on a computer to create multiple scan angles before users can access 3D images. Faster turn-around times also translate to more rapid medical intervention diagnoses, less waiting time for results, and quicker patient recovery times.
